Lemniscaat Illustration Competition

I attended the annual World Wide Picture Book Illustration Competition.
The illustrations drawn for this project had to have a connection through a story.
I wrote this story (a poem) myself based on true events and locations throughout my travels through Ireland and Northern Ireland.
April 2018

Somewhere
Written by Paul van der Maarel

I travel through Ireland
All on my own.
With a big backpack
And a tent as my home.

I hitchhike around
To get to some place
It’s incredibly fun
To meet a strange face

First my thumb went in the sky
But people looked at me with a funny eye
Where I should go, it had to be clear
And all of a sudden I had an idea.

I walked to the store, the one that was close
I pointed and said ‘Please, give me one of those.
They gave me some cardboard in order to note
I want to go ‘Somewhere’, with a crayon I wrote.

After many a refusal
And an hour to stand
It turned out to be useful
One pulled over, that’s grand!

I hitchhike around
To get to some town
It’s more than just fun
To go on till sundown

The car that stopped by
Was the fifty-fifth
A young couple with children
Said I could drive with

One willing to bring me
from A to we’ll see,
deserves a great story
even though some are wee.

I tell them of camping
Next to some old bridges
And when it’s not raining
being bitten by midges

I hitchhike around
To just get somewhere
It’s way too much fun
To be here and then there

Music and stories in a magical barn
1 car that brought me 600 miles far
A used to be hotel with elderly men
And a legends’ grave in a beautiful glen

Fiddle tunes at night in the pub
Pitching my tent next to a GAA club
Throwing used teabags out into the garden
Almost get busted by a local game warden

Drinking too many lukewarm stouts
Chasing and herding a herd of cows
Smoldering turf with a wonderful smell
And a festival where they storytell

I hitchhike around
To get to ‘you choose’
It’s exciting and fun
There’s no better excuse

After many days hitching
And evenings pitching
It feels like my home
In which I can roam

The people I meet
The locations I see
The stories they told
Are the best to behold

And after the night
I pack up and I cite
‘Alright, you take care.
You can find me ‘Somewhere’’
